Sisters running 365 miles in memory of grandmother
When sisters Lucy and Katie Playfair pledged they would run at least a mile every single day of the year, they realised a huge challenge lay ahead of them.
But more than two months in, the actual size of the task, being done in memory of their grandmother Catherine Lawrence, has dawned on them.
The pair agreed they would put on their running shoes each day in 2015, rain or shine, freezing or scorching, to raise cash for a cancer charity.
As well as bringing in funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care, they were also desperate to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer, which their grandmother Cath suffered with.
Knowing their grandmother did not have long to live, Lucy and Katie decided the turn of the year would be the perfect time to start their challenge.
Cath, who lived in Kingswinford, sadly passed away in January, but her death has given the sisters extra motivation to complete the task.
Lucy, aged 21, from Brierley Hill, said: "My nan was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer last March.
"The Marie Curie nurses have given us lots of support - they were there when we couldn't be.
"She passed away a few weeks ago and we wanted to give something back to the charity.
"But we also want to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer. It is the fourth biggest killer in terms of cancer and no-one really knows about it."
So the pair settled on running, but for Lucy the challenge was slightly more daunting compared to her older sister.
"I couldn't run to the end of the drive," she said
But it was important to her that she pushed herself out of her comfort zone.
Lucy, who works in insurance in Birmingham, said: "We wanted to do something to challenge ourselves, I went out with Katie and did a few runs at the end of last year.
"Now we have completed a hundred miles.
The sisters agreed they would not dip below a mile each every day.
As Katie was a more experienced runner, she set herself a target a completing two miles on each run.
They carry out their runs separately during the week, as Katie now lives in Somerset, and get together at weekends when they test themselves by taking on five-mile runs.
Lucy admits the harsh winter conditions have made leaving the house difficult on some days.
She said: "It was a challenge when it was snowing, and when you have the wind to battle against it makes it a lot harder.
"But I'm getting into the swing of it now. It was a challenge to start with and I'm suffering with a sprained ankle at the moment but I'm still continuing to do it, I want to complete it."
From being a running novice little over two months ago, Lucy has become so confident that she is aiming to take on the Birmingham half marathon in October.
The sisters are hoping to raise £2,000 each but say the most important thing is completing the challenge for their grandmother.
Lucy said: "We started before she passed away and she knew we were doing it.
"I think she would be really proud to see we are still doing it every day.
"We were really close to her, she was a massive part of our lives."
