Bill Clement was introduced to his wife-to-be Margaret by his brother at a dance at Caldmore Liberal Club.

They started talking and from their love blossomed, leading to them getting married at St Michael's church in 1954.

The couple, who have lived in The Butts, Walsall, for more than 30 years spent some time living in Australia.

They were in Sydney and Perth across three years in the early 1970s, before becoming homesick and returned to the Midlands.

Bill, aged 79, worked as a truck driver including more than 20 years at S Jones in Aldridge. He earlier served with the Staffordshire Regiment in Egypt and Cyprus from 1954 and Territorial Army.

Mrs Clement worked at the Stanley Martin's clothing shop in Park Street, Walsall, and was also a leather machinist and was employed in a wallpaper business.

The couple have three children Diane, aged 57, Julie, 54, and 53 year-old Paul, along with seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

To mark their milestone Diamond anniversary last month the pair had a short break in Cornwall and then had a family meal. They enjoy going out for meals and to the theatre.

Mrs Clement, 78, said the key to a successful marriage was being there for one another.

"We still care about each other and live for each other," she said. "We help each other a lot."
