But it is no longer hair to stay for fundraiser Gavin Davies after the father-of-three finally had a shave after 12 months.

The 32-year-old from Staffordshire vowed not to cut off his facial fuzz for a year to collect cash for bereavement charity, A Child of Mine.

It grew to eight inches and he was unable to eat some foods because of the mess it created as the hair got in the way. The sales consultant at Bathstore in Stafford had to carry a comb around with him after starting to grow it on Christmas Day last year.

But after completing his challenge and raising more than £660 he finally had it chopped on Boxing Day.

It took around 20 minutes to be cut and then shaved and such was the difference his two-year-old son did not recognise who he was at first.

Mr Davies, of Francis Close, Penkridge, decided to raise money for the charity after friends lost their child, aged two, to cancer. He said he was pleased to collect cash for the cause and thanked everyone for their support and is still aiming to collect £1,000.

"I had to change the way I was eating because it was getting in the way," he said. "My face would be in the bowl before I realised.

"Once I got rid of the beard and looked in the mirror, I looked like a 12 year old again.

"A soon as it started to come off I could feel the air on my face. It is a big difference you can feel the cold.

"It has been quite overwhelming what people have donated."

People can continue to donate through the www.justgiving.com/beard4acom web page.

A Child Of Mine is here to help and support anyone affected by the death of a youngster.
