Dashing through the frost - Santas on the run

A sea of Santas took over Cannock town centre as part of festive fundraising push.

Some 75 runners dressed in white-trimmed red Father Christmas outfits turned out on a frosty Saturday morning for the town's fifth annual Santa Dash.

Shoppers cheered them on as they arrived at the bandstand.

It is hoped to raise more than £3,000 for children's charity Newlife which provides equipment for disabled youngsters.

Children who have been helped by the charity were among those who took part at the weekend. One youngster, who is waiting for a wheelchair from Newlife, walked the one-mile route with his guide dog.

The race was won by veteran runner Alistair Payne, who owns the Bank Bar and Lounge in Cannock.

Philippa Gregory, the charity's deputy community fundraising manager said: "The weather was perfect - cold but sunny with a fantastic blue sky.

"Lots of families signed up for the race, both young and old, and everyone did a really good job. Cannock Radio compered the event from the bandstand which created a great atmosphere. It was all very informal, no one was taking down finishing times."

Among those taking part were Hednesford Town's mascot Pitman Pete and teams from NHS Waistline Service, Great Wyrley Juniors FC and Bridgtown gym Optimal Sports Performance who organised the warm-up.

Newlife recently revealed that demand for its services has risen steeply in the past year.

The Cannock-based national charity, which provides practical support services for disabled and terminally ill children, handed over equipment grants worth more than £2 million in 2013/14 - a 33 per cent increase on the previous 12 months.

The proceeds from last year's festive run helped four Staffordshire children by providing specialist walkers for three youngsters and a standing frame for a fourth.

The route from Chase Leisure Centre took runners and walkers through the grounds and around Cannock park before heading for the bandstand in the town centre. Refreshments and goody bags were handed out at the Bank Bar and Lounge afterwards.
