Firework finale for tonight's big Christmas lights switch-on in Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton's big Christmas lights switch-on was taking place tonight in Market Square - and organisers encouraged as many people as possible to come along.
The fun was beginning at 5pm, with people able to browse for gifts, sweets, novelties and festive goodies.
Kim Gilmour, WV One operations director, said: "Whilst attending the event two years ago we noticed that the market stalls were not being used and set about creating a pop-up market for small traders as part of our Wolverhampton Independent Network (WIN) campaign. The market proved very popular both with customers and traders and added to the ambience of the night."
Councillor John Reynolds, Wolverhampton City Council cabinet member for city services, added: "The pop-up market will add to the festive atmosphere of the popular Christmas lights switch-on event and we're delighted to be working in partnership with WVOne to make this happen."
A spectacular firework finale was due to light up the sky at 6.30pm, and free parking will be available at the School Street car park from 3pm, with many shops will open until 9pm for Christmas shopping.
Councillor Elias Mattu, cabinet member for leisure and communities, said: "We want to see as many families as possible pack out Wolverhampton's Market Square and enjoy our Christmas lights switch-on and fireworks show. This year we have got special guests Joe Tracini as well as Wolves FC players and of course Father Christmas and his real reindeer. I'm sure children and their families will love it."
