Meet Daisy - the man eater: Three-inch toy removed from cat

Three-year-old Daisy has a habit of carrying odds and ends around the house, but her latest trick landed her in the operating theatre.

The Devon Rex had to take a trip to the vets after swallowing a child's toy- a little yellow rubber man - whole.

Owner Maggie O'Callaghan said her family had been cleaning out the children's bedroom and left a box of toys on the landing. Mrs O'Callaghan, of Sedgley, said she saw Daisy with the little figure but the moggie was unwilling to part with her new-found prized possession and promptly gobbled it down.

Luckily, St George's Veterinary Group came to the rescue after an x-ray showed the little chap lodged in her system.

Vet Steve Ashman operated on Daisy in Wolverhampton and removed the three-inch toy from the small bowel. The toy was removed through Daisy's stomach - feet first - during an operation lasting less than an hour.

Mrs O'Callaghan said: "She is absolutely fine now, she is eating and drinking and looking for toys that aren't there."

Daisy - who has been dubbed a 'man eater' by the vet - regularly carries items around the house, including pens, pencils, paper, even a photograph of Mrs O'Callaghan's late father.

"It is a bit bizarre. She doesn't do anything to it, I think it is a bit of a Devon Rex trait," she said.

"She was quite attached to a long piece of pink string for awhile, and she would find it wherever we hid it. Obviously we had to confiscate that."

St George's said stones, pebbles and socks are the more common things fished from animals, but they had seen a few bras and needles as well.
