Wolverhampton teen wins national photography prize
A split-second decision to take a snap of a helicopter has won a Wolverhampton teenager first prize in a national photography competition.
Jacob O'Hara, of Lower Penn, was on the last day of a family holiday when he visited The Needles, Isle of Wight, in August.
The 15-year-old said: "We only went out there really because we knew no one else would be there and it would be a quiet end to the holiday.
"While we were there I saw a helicopter above The Needles and thought it would make a really good picture, so I ran out and took it and didn't really think about it."
The Highfields School student entered the photo in a national competition organised by Heritage Great Britain, which is responsible for the landmark site.
His efforts won the junior category of the contest, and as well as a shiny new television, Jacob's photo will appear in the 2015 Heritage Great Britain calendar alongside the other shortlisted photographs.
Profits from the calendar will be donated to Llanberis Mountain Rescue and RNLI.
Jacob said he had just been getting into photography as a hobby in the past few months, and took his DSLR camera with him when he was out and about to snap anything that caught his eye.
With his first success under his belt Jacob said he would look at entering more photography competitions.
Peter Johnson-Treherne, Heritage Great Britain financial director, said Jacob was a deserving winner: "After deciding a shortlist of entries the judges were relieved to hand the final decision over to the public who voted on social media."
