Also revealed on page one on this day was the news of Wolverhampton's first Asian mayor Councillor Bishen Dass being forced to change his phone number and go ex-directory after receiving a string of abusive calls.

We also ran colour pictures of Prince Andrew and his wife-to-be Sarah Ferguson - the future Duchess of York. The couple sadly split just 10 years later.

Pictured bottom left, meanwhile, is former Wolves chairman Harry Marshall who was on this day considering 'a dramatic comeback' just four years after being ousted.
