Your pages from the past: Friday September 27, 1974
Paul (@PJN74) tweeted us yesterday, asking to see the Express & Star's front page from Friday September 27, 1974, the day he was born.
The headline read "Tyre row hits police", a story on how West Midlands Police had sold dangerous tyres to the public whilst auctioning off lost and stolen property in Birmingham.
The second lead story "Old folk in coach crash terror" told how a coach full of old-age pensioners crashed with a lorry near Lichfield. Sixteen were taken to hospital with minor injuries and shock, but luckily there were no fatalities.
Pictured in the centre of the page with a plaster over her mouth is Lynne Rowbotham, 10, who raised £22 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in a two hour sponsored silence. To stop herself being tempted to speak she stuck a plaster over her mouth!
