Express & Star

Your pages from the past: Monday, May 29, 1989

Trevor Hickman tweeted us yesterday, asking to see the Express & Star's front page from May 28, 1989. Sadly that was a Sunday and we don't publish on a Sunday, so here's Monday, May 29, 1989 instead.

Published
Monday, May 29, 1989 front page of the Express & Star.

The day's headline read "Grim toll as deaths mar the holiday". The Whitsun bank holiday saw a boy from Smethwick killed in a crash with an under-age driver, a Birmingham woman die in a diving accident, a biker shot dead by a rival gang, and a motorcyclist killed in a road accident.

Pictured in the centre of the page are Phil Evans and Simon Latham, both from the Black Country, who dressed up as Batman and Robin and drove the 4,000 miles around Britain's coastline to raise money for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund.

Also included on the front page was a story on the appearance of five men at Wolverhampton Crown Court following a drugs raid and a riot that ensued in Heath Town. A further 13 were arrested over the incident.

On the left-hand side of the page in very small shorts is Wolves player Steve Bull, pictured celebrating after scoring for England.
