Between 800 and 900 people completed the 2.5-mile route around Penkridge yesterday morning.

The event organised by Penkridge Round Table also featured live music, entertainment, fair rides and a barbecue.

It raised money for local charities.

Organiser Tim Rowlands said: "We had a fantastic fun run with hundreds of people taking part, there was a real sense of community as everyone pulled through the run.

"The weather was also great, everything has gone very well, we're delighted and want to thank everyone for coming down."

The run was open to all ages and abilities. There was also a prize for the best fancy dress of the day.

Paul Thacker, aged 46, of Francis Green Lane in Penkridge, won the race with a time of 13 minutes and 14 seconds. The runner from Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club was given a trophy.

It is the first time he has won it, having coming second for the past three times he has taken part.

He said: "I'm delighted, but it's not just about the race. It is a great, well organised event which is of benefit to the whole village."

Also in the run was Sam Brewer, who ran round with a hand puppet bird called Dodo. The 49-year-old, of Bridgewater Close in Penkridge was joined by wife Blyth, 45, and daughter Dulcie, 12.

He ran the race in about 25 minutes.

He said: "It is exceptionally good this year, we come every time. It's just a great social event where you can see everyone."

The run was marshalled by volunteers with medical support provided by St John's Ambulance Service.

More than 30 village groups and organisations ran stalls for the popular event.
