The festival, which celebrates the founding of the Sikh community known as the Khalsa, is considered one of the holiest days in the Sikh calendar and marks the faith's new year.

The Council of Sikh Gurdwaras in Wolverhampton is holding this year's festival in the city's West Park on Sunday between 10am and 5pm.

There will be a range of family entertainment, including a funfair, stalls, Bhangra displays and wrestling and karate demonstrations.

Religious leaders will be on hand to deliver speeches and a variety of local organisations will showcase their services, while free food will also be served throughout the day.

There will also be an exhibition examining the cultural and historic significance of the festival.

Entry is free.

Park Ward Councillor Claire Darke said: "This is a festival that is always well attended and serves to bring the communities of the city together."

Before the festivities start, there will be a parade from the Guru Nanak Satsang Gurdwara on Cannock Road to West Park, starting at 9am.

It follows several other events to mark Vaisakhi which have taken place across the Midlands in recent weeks.

One of the biggest events in Europe took place in Smethwick and Birmingham at the weekend.

Thousands of people transformed the streets into a sea of colour with a procession starting in Smethwick before the day culminated in a huge gathering in Handsworth Park, Birmingham.
