Four times World Superbike champion Carl Fogarty and former British champion James Whitham have committed to raising funds for the new Shropshire and Staffordshire Blood Bikes (SSBB).

The new service sees an army of volunteer bikers deliver blood and other medical supplies to places where it is most urgently needed. Fogarty and Whitham were special guests at the launch event held at RAF Cosford yesterday.

Fogarty said: "We are pleased to support the Blood Bikes service. They do such a great job in delivering urgently required blood and other medical items to NHS patients, helping to save lives."

The Shropshire and Staffordshire Blood Bikes already have over 100 volunteer riders and supporters.

SSBB chairman Chris Powdrill said: "The emergency Blood Bikes service is a charity run entirely by volunteers, providing a vital service delivering blood and medical items which can save the NHS about £300 per urgent delivery. SSBB is fortunate to have raised sufficient funds to purchase its first two blood bikes but will need six bikes to provide cover for the whole of Shropshire and Staffordshire."
