Work is expected to start this coming summer if planners clear the way for the building of a new anchor store, restaurants, cafes and shops and a bridge over the canal at Kidderminster.

The ambitious regeneration scheme could also see retention of the Frank Freeman memorial plaque and creation of a tourist trail to celebrate the town's musical heritage.

Henderson Global Investors, owners of Weavers Wharf, has submitted a planning application for the scheme to Wyre Forest District Council. Pending approval in March or April next year, work is expected to start next summer, with completion in the summer of 2016.

The application focuses on plans to transform the River Stour into a centrepiece with a new public square, which will feature markets, fetes and other events, flanked by new restaurants and cafes.

Proposals include new trees and landscaping, street furniture, seating and an extension of pedestrian space.

Short-stay parking will also be made available for use when markets or events are not taking place. The proposals include the demolition of a number of shops and offices, including Crown House, a building regarded by many people as creating a negative image of the town.

Existing shop owners and businesses affected by the plans will be relocated.

Martin Perry, director of retail development at Henderson, said: "We have engaged extensively with the local community on this project.

"The feedback received has been extremely useful in helping us finalise our proposals."

Council leader Councillor John Campion said: "It is important that Kidderminster adapts and changes with the times."
