Around 300 people packed into Church Street in Bilston to see pupils from Bilston Church of England School and Loxdale Primary School join the Mayor of Wolverhampton Councillor Milkinder Jaspal and MP for Wolverhampton South East Pat McFadden turn on the lights.

Even Santa made an appearance ahead of a busy few weeks before the big day next month.

Signal 107 FM began the big countdown as the town centre was lit up to launch the beginning of the festivities in Bilston.

Visitors were treated to a Christmas market as well as bouncy castles and fair rides on a chilly night.

Councillor Jaspal addressed those in attendance at the event.

He said: "It's a real honour to be here in Bilston to switch on the Christmas lights. All of you who have come out on Friday evening should be proud."

Manjit Purewal, aged 33, from Bilston was there with her children Sukhjit, aged six-years-old and Rumneek aged four-years-old.

She said: "This is the first time that I have been to see the lights switched-on in Bilston and it's really good. I came from a big city and coming to Bilston there's very much a village feel to it even though it's a town and the lights are better than I expected.

"It has really got the kids excited for Christmas and they keep asking me when Santa is coming."

Ros Causer, was there with her grandchildren Katelyn (corr) and Sophie Hampton, aged six and 10-years-old, she said: "It's been a lovely evening with my family and we have all enjoyed the lights. I think they liked meeting Santa the most."
