Home extension nightmare had a happy ending
It was supposed to transform their house into the home of their dreams and ate up £70,000 of their life savings.
But Wolverhampton couple Mike and Emma Jenvey have revealed how their dream home expansion turned into a real-life nightmare.
The pair, from Tettenhall, appear in Channel 5 show Cowboy Builders, starring Dominic Littlewood and Melinda Messenger, which is on at 8pm tonight.
The couple, who have two children, say the stress of the ordeal on Emma, who was expecting her baby son Otto at the time, meant she suffered complications with her pregnancy.
Mike said dedicating his life to fixing up the mess that was left cost him many hours he could have spent with his family. He said: "I haven't been much of a parent because I've been working on the house."
Littlewood took to the region trying to trace Mark Bailey, of Codsall-based Bailey Construction – the man said to have caused the problems at the Jenveys' property.
The investigator managed to speak to a former employee of Mr Bailey and to Sunil Fatania from Wolverhampton, who hired the builder to add a large kitchen and a bedroom to his house.
When he finally found him, Mr Bailey said the work at the Jenveys had been inspected and denied he was paid more than £70,000 for the extension, insisting he was paid £47,000. He said: "They had a lot of extras. It's not £71,000, no chance. The foundations were checked by the inspector at the time."
The Express and Star did make efforts to contact Bailey Construction but were unable to obtain contact details or a location for his firm.
Carvers Building Merchants were one of the companies that donated materials to the family to help salvage their dreams.
Boss Henry Carver said: "It felt the right thing to do to put the mistakes right for the sake of this family."
