The company, which already runs a technical ceramics plant in the town, chose the town from a shortlist of six international locations which included sites in America and Asia.

It will open a Global Materials Centre of Excellence for structural ceramics materials and applications. The firm's products are used in a variety of ways from medical instruments, aerospace, power generation and satellite communications, to body armour, trains and fire protection systems.

The news is a boost for the Wyre Forest district which has been hit hard in recent years by the loss of firms including luxury boat manufacturer Sealine which went into administration last year.

The new base is expected to open later this year.
