After three years at the college doing courses in painting and decorating, Jamie Irwin felt ready to start working but there was still so much that he could learn to improve his long term career prospects; so an apprenticeship seemed like the ideal route to take.

Getting the apprenticeship with Aston Villa FC's facilities department, helping to maintain the stadium training ground was a dream come true as he is a life-long Villa supporter.

Irwin, aged 21 and from Erdington, said:?"Doing my training at the club was amazing as I was able learn new skills quickly and supported by a mentor who has over 10 years experience in painting and decorating.

"I've now successfully completed my qualification and have been given more responsibility at work. I've always wanted to make a living from painting and decorating, but following an apprenticeship route has helped me to get my dream job quicker than I thought was possible.

"I love coming to work everyday, and at Aston Villa I'll also have the opportunity to learn other trades and continue to develop my career," he added.

Head of facilities at Aston Villa, Tom Fantini, said: "As a football club, we face many unique challenges and require employees to be multi-skilled and adept at working in a fast moving environment.

"Taking on Jamie has proven beneficial as we have been able to develop him to work in a way which best suits the business.

"We took Jamie on at a grass roots level and were impressed with his work ethic and commitment to learn from his peers."
