Intervate has ploughed the cash into the project at Portersfield Road Industrial Estate.

When fully operational, before the end of 2013, the plant will produce enough electricity each year for 8,500 homes, with the potential to heat 4,000 homes as well.

The plant will use up to 25,000 tonnes a year of waste wood, which otherwise would have gone to landfill, as well as waste paper and cardboard which is no longer capable of being recycled.

It uses advanced gasification technology to convert the biomass material into electricity.

Recruitment for positions, including materials handling operatives, process technicians and administrative support, at the Cradley Heath plant will start early next year.
