Home furnishing giant Dunelm Mill is in talks over one of Kidderminster's largest disused retail sites, it has been revealed.

Bosses at the chain today said they were interested in the former Morrisons supermarket building, in Oxford Street.

It is earmarked for redevelopment and has been branded an eyesore on one of the town's main gateways.

The site has become a magnet for drunks and anti-social behaviour since the supermarket moved to new premises further along the road.

Dunelm Mill confirmed it was in discussion about the site but stressed no plans had been finalised. But it has already submitted a planning application to Wyre Forest District Council asking for permission to install signs at the site.

The plans are for two illuminated signs, a totem sign with the name of the firm for outside the building and parking signs.

Consultation has started on the signs and is due to conclude on September 16.

Dunelm first revealed it was considering opening a store in Kidderminster two months ago and it was looking at potential sites around the town centre. A new store would create about 50 jobs for the town.

Dunelm spokesman John Olsen did not comment on the planning application for signs but said: "We are in discussions regarding the old Morrisons site in Oxford Street."

Ward councillor Graham Ballinger today welcomed the firm's interest.
