Poundland is on track to break a £600 million turnover with the help of World Cup memorabilia, its boss said today.

The Black Country based company is expecting to shift £3 million worth of England World Cup themed stock alone before the end of the tournament.

It sold nearly £100,000 worth of bunting last week at its nationwide stores and also has everything from England horns and bugles to car stickers, drinks containers and flags for sale.

Poundland, which has its distribution bases in Willenhall and Bilston, is building on the success by opening 32 new stores this year.

Its chief executive Jim McCarthy said today: "We broke the half-a-billion mark for sales at the end of the last financial year and I think it will be over £600 million by the end of this financial year.

"The World Cup has been great for us, we sold almost £100,000 worth of the bunting last week and we have World Cup flags on two for £1 as well as horns and bugles and all sorts and we are looking to sell around £3million worth of the England lines. I think the World Cup is good for a lot of businesses."
