New Tesco superstore begins to take shape in Walsall

Construction of a new Tesco superstore creating around 200 jobs in Walsall town centre is underway.
The metal framework of the supermarket has started to be erected on the site of the former Walsall College. The first visual signs of the building can now be seen by shoppers and motorists travelling through the town.
It is planned that the shape of the superstore will be in place by the end of the year ready for opening in February 2011.
Tesco spokesman Tony Fletcher said construction had started within the proposed timescale and was on track.
"It is a key milestone in the scheme as there has mainly been a lot of preparation work so far. It is going well and we aim to be ready early next year."
It is being built on the old St Paul's campus site after a land swap agreement with Tesco and Walsall College. Once the building is completed it is expected to take between four and six weeks to kit out the superstore with stock and fittings.
Planning permission for the 10,880 sq metre store, including 750 car parking spaces, cafe and offices, was given last year. The site was vacated by the St Paul's campus of Walsall College during the summer break after the completion of the new Wisemore campus.
