Device will stop drink drivers getting behind the wheel
A Black Country manufacturer has launched a new product aimed at helping prevent intoxicated drivers getting behind the wheel of company vehicles.
The firm – Rowley Regis based Keytracker – has designed an integrated key cabinet and breathalyser device, which will only release vehicle keys once users have proved that they are sober.
The device – the Alcolock – was designed by Keytracker in response to a request from a major client which had concerns about employees driving forklift trucks whilst under the influence of alcohol.
Keytracker's designers came up with a prototype which has been successfully tested at the forklift company's premises, and it is now being launched on the open market. Keytracker believes that the device will be hugely attractive to the fleet market, and to transport managers and logistics companies.
Business development manager Ryan Slaney said that among the advantages offered by the device were security and safety. "It obviously increases safety, as anyone believed to be under the influence of alcohol will not be able to access vehicle keys," he said.
"It will also help company principals, as under current legislation, companies and managers are responsible not only for the fitness and suitability of their company vehicles but also that of the people who drive them."
The Alcolock consists of a locked key cabinet, to which is mounted a breathalyser unit. Anyone who wants to access the cabinet must provide a sample via a tube attached to the breathalyser. If the sample fails, details are immediately emailed to the company's senior management – and the key cabinet remains locked.
The breathalyser units have been supplied by a Canadian alcometer manufacturer, but the remainder of the device, including the software, is designed and manufactured by Keytracker.
The company is hoping that the device will clock up sales of around 100 units in its first three months, and the intention is to market it overseas.
The company hopes that the success of the Alcolock device will lead to the creation of more jobs.
