Alan and Maureen Butler met at Bilston Carnival on a youth club outing and were married at St Patrick's Church in Walsall on November 21 1959. They are celebrating their Blue Sapphire milestone.

They have three children, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren between them and many will be present at Darlaston Labour Club as they celebrate family, friends and the sanctity of marriage.

After being married the couple - who were born only a month apart - moved in with Alan's parents and settled in the Bentley area.

Alan, who is nearly 85, was a career electrician whilst Maureen, who is 85, worked in a wool shop in Walsall and factories manufacturing glass and glue.

They enjoyed a meal out on the actual anniversary ahead of their big celebration tonight (Saturday).

Asked what the secret of a happy marriage is, Alan and Maureen agreed it is being able to get on with each other and being able to laugh together.
