People injured after roof collapses at Pontins resort

Several people were injured after the ceiling collapsed in an entertainment room of a holiday park.

It was initially thought that people were trapped after the incident, where a number of people suffered minor injuries, but police later confirmed that no one was trapped.

The roof caved in on a building at the Pontins Brean Sands resort in Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset at around 6.30pm yesterday.

Families in the West Midlands are believed to have been staying on the site at the time of the incident.

A woman, from Kidderminster, who wished to stay anonymous, said: "My best friend, another friend and two children are over there.

"It's horrific and upsetting, her children are like my children, there could be so many children in there."

Emergency services, including police, ambulance , the air ambulance and the fire service, were called to the scene.

A spokesman from Avon and Somerset police said: "Shortly before 6.30pm this evening we were called to Brean Sands Holiday Park following reports a ceiling had collapsed inside a building.

"A number of people suffered minor injuries in the incident but thankfully no one was seriously hurt."

Police also confirmed that the Health and Safety Executive have been informed of the roof collapse.
