Vandal attack puts pitch out of action

Vandals went on the rampage at a Black Country football club, churning up the pitch and breaking floodlights, causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

Bosses at Darlaston Town FC have been left devastated by the attack, which they fear could put the club out of evening action for weeks. Last night's senior cup clash against Tipton had to be postponed because of the damage.

It is hoped Saturday afternoon's home tie will go ahead, but evening games will have to be postponed until the floodlights are repaired.

Yobs left a trail of destruction during Wednesday night's attack, which saw them smash up chairs and break junction electrical boxes which power the club's floodlights.

A lawn roller was also dragged onto the pitch at the Waverley Road venue, causing some surface damage.

Chairman Paul Tonks said the vandalism would hit a number of other Darlaston teams which also use the pitch and club house facilities.

"We're really upset about this because it might put us out of action for a bit. It's going to cost a few hundred pounds to fix it," he said.

"We have two matches a week at the moment. We are playing catch-up on games because of the heavy snow a few weeks ago, so we're already behind. This is the last thing we need."

Mr Tonks, who used to manage the club, added: "I don't know how we are going to pay for the repairs, which I think could cost around £500 to £600. It's just senseless vandalism."

Darlaston Town FC currently plays in the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division and is one of the oldest non-league clubs in the country.
