Former Wolves loanee Jeremy Helan 'quits football for religion'

The 24-year-old was on loan at Molineux from Sheffield Wednesday towards the end of last season.

The Sheffield Star reports that Helan, a devout Muslim, has been considering retirement for some time.

Their report adds: "His departure is expected to shortly be confirmed by the Championship club.

"Helan's contract was due to run out at the end of the 2016/17 season."

Left winger or left back Helan played eight times for Wolves before being recalled by Wednesday. Ironically he then played against Wolves at Molineux on the final day of the 2015/16 season, a fixture Wolves won 2-1.

Helan also featured in the end-of-season play offs, coming off the bench at Wembley as Wednesday were beaten 1-0 by Hull.

He has only made one appearance in the EFL Cup so far in 2016/17.

After his Wolves loan spell ex-boss Kenny Jackett said the club may look to sign Helan on a permanent basis.

"It very much depends where the club is and what we have to spend," Jackett said.

"He started very well, he's very athletic. It would have been interesting to have a look at him at left-back as well, but the time where there was that opportunity I decided to play our own player Sylvain Deslandes, at Hull.

"If you're playing him in the advanced positions, you're wondering how many goals is he going to score. But coming from deep, as he gets more experience in the Championship, there's an athletic player with a good left foot.

"He's made a good impression in terms of his personality as well – he puts 100 per cent in all of the time."

Former Manchester City youth player Helan also briefly featured for Shrewsbury Town during a loan spell in 2012.

Sheffield Wednesday have yet to comment on the report.

* Meanwhile ex-Wolves player Alex Rae has been sacked as manager of St Mirren.

Rae took charge nine months ago but leaves the Buddies bottom of the Scottish Championship and without a league win so far this season.
