Kenny Jackett: Wolves lack squad depth for Championship level
Wolves' threadbare squad lacks the depth to compete in the Championship, Kenny Jackett has stated.
Ahead of the season starting on August 6 Wolves have signed just one player this summer – goalkeeper Andy Lonergan.
The ongoing takeover situation, of which there was no update yesterday, has curtailed any incoming transfers for the time being.
Jackett will on Sunday take a 25-man squad to Cork containing several untried teenagers, and he has a shortage of senior defenders and strikers.
The Wolves boss told the Express & Star: "We lack competition in certain areas, we lack cover, we definitely lack depth – there is no doubt about that – for the level that we're playing at.
"Should we pick up some injuries it's going to be very difficult."
Of the takeover situation, Jackett reiterated he's carrying on as normal preparing the players for training and matches.
With his prospective successor Julen Lopetegui heavily linked with the Spain job, is there a scenario of the takeover being completed and Jackett staying as head coach?
"I don't know. The conversations I've had haven't covered that," he said.
"And both parties are bound by confidentiality agreements.
"That's information only my employers can answer."
Are Wolves currently negotiating transfers under two budgets – one in the event of a takeover and one without?
Jackett replied: "The people at the top, buying and selling the club, are the ones that know.
"But I'm sure they're both aware the season is coming. And then by August 31 the window closes and there's no loans – everyone is aware of that and is preparing for each scenario, have thought about each scenario, but then if there's a likelihood of one way or another that would affect what we do there.
"All of those decisions and that planning is above me."
Wolves kick off their pre-season friendly campaign tonight away at Crewe Alexandra, kick off 7.30pm.
