Exclusive: Fulham-bound Kevin McDonald nears Wolves exit

Wolves midfielder Kevin McDonald is believed to be on the verge of moving to Championship rivals Fulham.

McDonald was left out of Kenny Jackett's squad for Saturday's behind-closed-doors friendly against Shrewsbury and is thought to be close to finalising a deal to move to Craven Cottage.

Sources suggest talks are at an advanced stage. A fee is believed to have been agreed, but the amount is not known.

The Scot almost joined Fulham last summer but Wolves rejected bids of £1m and £1.25m.

If, as expected, the deal goes ahead it will end a turbulent 12 months for the 27-year-old.

When Fulham's interest surfaced last summer he was unhappy at what he saw as a derisory contract offer on the table from Wolves.

McDonald was left out of the squad for a pre-season friendly at Burton with Jackett saying the midfielder was too unsettled to play.

Talks then stalled before a three-year contract was eventually agreed in September.

However in March of this year McDonald was hauled off at half time against Bristol City - and then dropped for the rest of the season.

Jackett insisted the pair hadn't had a falling out, and then in May he surprisingly offered 2013/14 player of the season McDonald a fresh start by claiming he wanted the player to stay and fight for his place.

That call was reiterated last week, but it appears that McDonald's three-year Wolves career is at an end.

Jackett, as highlighted in Saturday's 2-2 draw against Shrewsbury, has a threadbare senior squad to pick from but central midfield is not a position Wolves are short in.

Jack Price, Conor Coady, George Saville Lee Evans and David Edwards are all options for Jackett, whose position as head coach continues to appear precarious with a takeover by Chinese billionaire Robin Li looking imminent.
