Kenny Jackett confirms interest in hotshot striker

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett has confirmed that striker Adam Armstrong is on his radar – as he lines up his targets for the January transfer window.

Armstrong is currently enjoying a prolific loan spell at League One side Coventry City, scoring 12 in 14 games to put him joint-top with Jamie Vardy as the country's leading goalscorer.

The 18-year-old's deal with the Sky Blues expires in January. However Tony Mowbray's Sky Blues are favourites to secure his services for the rest of the season.

"We've watched him at Coventry," Jackett confirmed. "We watch a lot of players, but we haven't made any approach (to Newcastle).

"He's done well and been an interesting player coming out of the under-21s at Newcastle into League One, had a good start and scored goals.

"He won't be short of teams watching him, he'll have drawn a lot of attention.

"I thought he drew quite a bit of attention when he was at Newcastle anyway, playing well for the under-21s, but going out and doing it at first team football is a big one.

"He's joint-top scorer in the country, he'll be being watched by a lot of clubs."

Wolves also have Manchester United's James Wilson on their radar, about whom Jackett added: "We've kept an eye on it but we haven't made any fresh inquiries in terms of James."

Villa's Joe Cole, currently on a temporary deal at Coventry, recently compared Tyneside-born Newcastle academy product Armstrong to Sergio Aguero.

Newcastle boss Steve McClaren, though, hinted that Armstrong would stay at the Ricoh Arena for the remainder of the campaign.

He said on the teenager's immediate future: "There's a lot of clubs coming in from higher up.

"We just think it's an education for him (at Coventry). He could go higher up, might play, might not.

"Will he get the coaching? You don't unless you play. It's important to us."

Jackett will hope any transfer window buys can replicate the impact made by Benik Afobe, who was signed from Arsenal last January.

The Wolves head coach added: "With every transfer window there is that opportunity. If you can assess it right and make the right moves you can come through the other side and be successful."

"When you're looking next season when there won't be any emergency loans, the windows take on even more importance."
