Mick McCarthy's tribute to Sir Jack Hayward
Former Wolves manager Mick McCarthy paid tribute to Sir Jack Hayward as "the perfect gentleman" after the former owner's death was announced.
Sir Jack died in Florida today, aged 91, and tributes have started pouring in.
McCarthy said: "He wasn't around that much by the time I arrived at the club but my over-riding memory is of meeting him and Jez Moxey in London when I went to have my interview for the job.
"And I remember thinking he was a really good guy and I sat and chatted with him for a couple of hours.
"That was really the longest time I spent with him, but he also used to stop and chat when he came to games and he was always the perfect gentleman.
"And I am well aware of the contribution he made to the history of the club – it was amazing."
Former Wolves striker Don Goodman added: "Jonathan, his son, was in charge of the club on a day-to-day basis by the time I arrived as Sir Jack had entrusted it to him.
"But Sir Jack still came along to games and he was one of the most approachable guys you could ever meet.
"He was always polite, he never ignored you, he always acknowledged you and he always had a word to say about the game or the club.
"And I don't just mean around the club. I remember I often used to see him in a local Chinese restaurant and in other places around Wolverhampton and he was always the same person – very friendly and approachable.
"He always had time for people and that is what struck me."
