Wolves' Scott Golbourne backed to shine in the Championship
Wolves boss Kenny Jackett today threw down the gauntlet to Scott Golbourne to wow the Championship like he did League One.
Left-back Golbourne returns to the stage he left with Barnsley after emerging as one of numerous stand-out performers in Wolves' charge to the League One title.
Head coach Jackett believes the 26-year-old, who joined from Oakwell last August for £700,000, is the eptiomy of the modern-day attacking full-back and wants to see more of the same in the Championship.
"It would be great if he did, and that's the challenge for all of us this season, to continue that upward curve," said Jackett.
"Can we impose ourselves and be a good Championship side?
"It's OK to say you've played in the Championship but can you be a good Championship player?
"That's an exciting challenge and it's there for Scott to continue his progress.
"And it's one I'm sure he's relishing, because he has a fantastic attitude, he takes individual responsibility and he works very hard and loves his football."
Jackett believes Golbourne's mobility is ideally suited to Wolves' fluid, flexible system.
"The game and the system we play all suit him – he's a modern-day full-back with attacking qualities and his running and his standard of fitness is unbelievable," he said.
"He really can get up and down the left-hand side."
Jackett isn't surprised at Golbourne's emergence after tracking him since he was a youngster at Bristol City, Reading and Exeter.
"I'd seen him all the way through; I know Steve Perryman and Paul Tisdale at Exeter very well and they kept saying to me, 'he's excellent, he's not going to stay with us, he's going to progress'.
"So he's someone I'd had my eye on and with people you know very well, you almost feel you have first-hand knowledge of them.
"Sometimes you need to wait until someone is 22 or 23 until people get that experience, break through and then gain that confidence where they can be that player they think they're capable of.
"He's a good example of what can happen. He moved to Reading at 18, 19-years-old and couldn't get in when were in the Premier League and maybe Nicky Shorey was around the England squad.
"But he's now stronger, more experienced and he's very strong in the way we play.
"He also showed ability last season to work at his weaknesses and tried to develop his game."
