Lee Evans: Bright future for Wolves youngsters

Wolves midfielder Lee Evans today insisted he is happy to be Kenny Jackett's flexible friend next season.

The 19-year-old's breakthrough campaign saw him operate in several different midfield roles.

Evans played as an attacking midfielder behind a central striker, to a narrow left or right in a diamond formation – as he did in the 3-1 win at Port Vale in August – and in the last two games of the season, as an anchorman alongside Kevin McDonald.

The youngster is happy to play anywhere and believes his versatility is an asset.

"I'd like to think I can do a job in the different positions in midfield whether that's as the holding player or getting forward more," he said.

"I played in a sitting role in those last two games and I think that's probably where I'd see me playing most during my career.

"The gaffer said I've got the legs to play the attacking role and I'm happy to play anywhere if it means I get in the team.

"I think we've got a good mix of central midfield players and all of us can bring different qualities to the team."

Watch Lee Evans celebrate with the League One trophy below.

But the Wales Under-21 international, who played 26 League games in Wolves' League One title success, admits he has got to prove himself all over again next season.

"To hear the gaffer say it's only going to be a gradual overhaul of the squad is good news for all of us trying to get in there, especially the younger lads," he said.

"We all want to play in the Championship and prove ourselves at that level.

"As players you have to back yourselves to make the step up, but it's one thing saying it and thinking it – you have to go and do it.

"It's a tough division and as a team we're still developing but we're always learning from each other and each other's games and I think we can continue to improve.

"As a club now I think we're only going in one direction.

"For me I have to give myself the best possible chance of playing again next season and I can only do that by staying in good shape over the summer and then impressing in pre-season.

"It will start all over again and for all of us the challenge will be there to impress the gaffer."
