Dave Edwards was today reassured he is on course to win a new Wolves deal if he maintains his current form.

The Wales international, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has started five of the last six games after a foot injury.

And Edwards has begun to discover some of his best form playing in a deeper central midfield role alongside Kevin McDonald.

Wolves have recently awarded new deals to Matt Doherty and Aaron McCarey, while the club have stepped up talks over a contract for Danny Batth.

Now Jackett believes 27-year-old Edwards, who celebrates six years at Molineux next month, can win an extension to his stay.

"I've been pleased with him in the short period he's been back and in terms of the contract, of course he can earn one," said Jackett.

"There's no doubt about that – that applies to anyone in the team. As a player, you're very much in the driving seat on that."

"It's a little bit early to be talking that way because he's only been back in for a few games.

"But I've been very pleased with what he's done and from a deeper position than mainly what he's played in his career.

"Maybe at 27 that might be his best thing now – we'll see.

"He makes very good decisions, he covers the ground very well and he's come up with one key goal against Tranmere a week last Tuesday which gave us a bit of breathing space in that game.

"In terms of his game, I think he has a bit of everything."

Jackett believes Edwards, who is just three League appearances short of 150 for Wolves, can give his best years to the club if he continues his current form.

"There's no reason now why he shouldn't have his best time, be at the peak of his career and put all of his experience to good use," said the head coach.

Edwards is among Wolves' longest serving players with Carl Ikeme, Wayne Hennessey, Kevin Foley, George Elokobi, who joined in the same month.
