Want-away Wolves pair set to stay put
Wolves today warned their star players they may have to come to terms with staying put.
Wolves today warned their star players they may have to come to terms with staying put.
The transfer sagas involving Steven Fletcher and Matt Jarvis have hit deadlock, with no further progress over the weekend.
Sunderland are expected to increase their bid for Fletcher beyond the £13m understood to have been offered, and edge towards Wolves' £15m valuation.
But West Ham have indicated they are out of the running for Jarvis, having failed with two bids culminating in a £9.5m package, of which £6.5m is up front.
Hammers boss Sam Allardyce appeared to be ready to withdraw from the race for the 26-year-old winger on Saturday night when he said: "It doesn't look like that one is going to happen. We're looking at other targets now."
A Molineux source indicated: "Both players need to get their heads around the fact that they may have to stay at the club."
Fletcher and Jarvis were due back in training today after Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Leeds in which Jarvis played the full game, ready to prepare for tomorrow's visit of Barnsley.
Meanwhile, boss Stale Solbakken today admitted Wolves could be suffering from a mental block caused by relegation.
"There's a mental barrier you have to go through when you have won maybe only one game in 27," he said. "The only way to change that mental barrier is to experience that winning feeling again.
"We can talk about working hard and staying mentally strong, but we have to win that first game to get over that hurdle."
Solbakken also believes fans must be patient as the players get used to his ideas.
"The players will take time to get used to my ideas and it doesn't happen in two games," he said. We'll get better and we're working hard at the basics."
Captain Karl Henry denied the speculation was affecting the players.
"It's not nice to be thinking about losing your best players because we want to keep them," he said.
"But we've had that uncertainty for a few months now and the season has started and we just need to be focused."
