Wolves edging closer to Björn Bergmann Sigurdarson deal

Wolves are inching closer to a deal to sign Lillestrom striker Björn Bergmann Sigurdarson.

The Molineux club have resumed talks with the 21-year-old Icelandic forward's Norwegian club, although neither party would comment on reports that a fee has now been agreed.

"We are interested in the player," is all Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey would say today.

But while Wolves are desperate to drive through a transfer heavily endorsed by new manager Stale Solbakken, it is thought the transfer trail has a way to run yet before a deal is clinched. Talks were on-going this weekend amid speculation in Scandinavia that a deal in the region of £3m had been struck.

Sigurdarson is the player singled out by Solbakken as the rising young prospect he wants to signal his arrival at Molineux and the beginning of a new era following the club's relegation to the Championship.

Solbakken has admitted that he is an admirer of a striker who came to the fore with a breakthrough campaign in Lillestrom's colours last season which saw him score 17 goals.

At the same time, Sigurdarson admits that linking up with the Norwegian coach on his first English posting carried great appeal – despite rival interest from at least two Premier League clubs.

Everton and newly-promoted Reading have also expressed their interest in the player but Wolves are hoping to cash in on the Solbakken factor to clinch the deal.

But with both of those clubs able to offer Premier League football, Wolves are nervous about breaking cover too early even though it is thought Sigurdarson believes a switch to the Championship will be of greater benefit to his blossoming career at this fledgling stage.

Lillestrom's official website confirmed that talks were on-going but shied away from confirming that they had reached a point where a deal had been struck and that the player was even heading for England this weekend for the personal talks which would seal his transfer.

Solbakken responded only with a stern "no comment" when quizzed by media in Norway last night.
