David Davis set for Premier League debut

Wolves were today considering handing youngster David Davis a shock Premier League debut in Saturday's crunch clash against Blackburn.

Karl Henry was ruled out for three weeks yesterday with a hamstring injury.

And with Dave Edwards rated "very doubtful" with the knee injury that kept him out of Sunday's 5-0 defeat at Fulham, the door could open for homegrown Davis.

With no natural, experienced replacement for ball-winner Henry, the 21-year-old Brummie was recalled from his loan at Chesterfield on Monday.

Boss Terry Connor revealed Davis, who has played just five minutes' senior football for Wolves in the Carling Cup at Northampton in August but 60 games in total on loan, is high in his thoughts.

"We're missing Karl and probably Dave Edwards, so we may as well have Dave back," said Connor. "He's fit and has been playing well. He'll keep that competition for places going."

Asked if Davis, a natural ball-winner, was ready for the Premier League, Connor said: "You don't know until you put him in do you?

"He's ready and he's training well, so if I think he's ready to play in our first team, that's where he has to play. He deserves to come back, and, if we're light in midfield, we'll consider him.

"He's been on loan at Darlington, Shrewsbury, Inverness and Walsall.

"He's not an 18-year-old, he's 21. He's started every match with his loan club so he's had his game time, and when he plays, he plays 90 minutes. That tells me he's fit and ready to play."

Connor said Davis is similar to Henry, adding: "Dave's a very strong, combative midfielder in the similar mould to Karl, so it's good to have that option."

For the moment, Connor, who discounted the idea of Sebastien Bassong playing there, is keeping his options open. "Eggert Jonsson and Nenad Milijas come into the equation, and Kev Foley did a job on Sunday," he added.

But Connor hinted Jonsson isn't ready for more Premier action yet. "Sometimes you need to have that time to bed in," he said.
