Wolves chairman Steve Morgan today admitted Alan Curbishley is a contender for the managerial hotseat and insisted they will act quickly to replace Mick McCarthy.

The Molineux chief revealed the club will move within the next few days after sacking McCarthy this morning following the 5-1 home mauling by Albion yesterday.

Wolves are yet to open discussions with anyone about the vacancy but Morgan said they would be interested in Curbishley.

"Of course, he has got a great track record and has been there and done it before. He's the calibre of what we're looking for but there are a number of other candidates," he said.

"I don't want to get drawn into a conversation about who we will be talking to but we'd certainly be interested in someone of his calibre.

"We won't be hanging around though, we can't afford to be hanging around. We'll take action in the next few days.

"We haven't spoken to anyone and wouldn't have done while Mick was in place. Now Mick is no longer with the club we'll be having a number of conversations with a number of people in the coming days."

And Curbishley, who hasn't managed since leaving West Ham in 2008, has already expressed his interest in taking over.

"If I get a phone call, then I'll speak to him. I have always said that I wanted to go back into the Premier League," said the former Charlton boss.

"I have had opportunities to go back since I have been out of the game. The Premier League is for me, I think my record stands up. It's just that I have been out of the game for some time now."

The Albion embarrassment dumped Wolves back in the Premier League drop zone on goal difference after one win in 13 games.

And Morgan insisted the decision needed to be made to ensure Wolves stayed in the top flight.

He said: "We have to give ourselves a fighting chance and we just didn't feel it was going that way with the way performances have been going over the last few months. We had little or no choice.

"But it was with a heavy heart because everyone likes Mick and we wish him all the best."
