The 28-year-old was at Molineux today for discussions, after the clubs agreed a fee approaching the £7million they paid for club-record signing Steven Fletcher.

Johnson, who was also shown around the Compton training ground, is poised to become the club's highest earner when he puts pen to paper on a four-year contract worth an estimated £40,000-a-week.

The Londoner has been manager Mick McCarthy's top target ever since the Express & Star first revealed their interest in the player on May 23, the day after they clinched survival.

Wolves acted quickly in resuming their hunt for Johnson, who they missed out two years ago when he joined Blues for £5million after being priced out of a move last week on Matt Mills, who has joined Leicester for an initial fee of £4.5million.

They were put off by Blues' demands of £9million for Johnson, but the clubs have reached a compromise on the fee.

McCarthy is also keen on Blues duo Scott Dann and Liam Ridgewell, but faces rivalry from Albion for the latter, while Dann is set to climb higher up the league.
