David Edwards eyes skipper's spot

Wolves midfielder David Edwards has admitted Karl Henry will be a huge loss for the club - but is hoping to help bridge the gap.

The 24-year-old is one of several players in line for an extended run in the team after returning to central midfield duties in Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Wigan.

Henry's early red card at the DW Stadium overshadowed subsequent events but Edwards made a steady contribution in the middle.

The Wales international, who will be vying with David Jones, Michael Mancienne and Nenad Milijas for the central role, is determined to make his presence count.

Edwards said: "Karl's been brilliant for us all last season and this season. He's such a good leader on and off the pitch and he's a good footballer as well.

"So it will be hard to replace him but there are so many good players in our squad who are capable of playing so I'm sure whoever does get the chance will take it with both hands.

"Three games seems like a long time to be without Karl, but it's up to players such as myself, David, Michael Mancienne and others to try to claim the spot.

"We've all got to work hard on that training pitch to make sure we're in that team and if we do get that chance, we've got to perform."

The Wigan defeat was Wolves' fourth on the spin and Edwards stressed the importance of players' heads not dropping.

He said: "It's not the same as last season when we had that dodgy patch, because I think we're playing good football.

"On Saturday it was hard to play football when we were down to 10 men, but the previous games we played well.

"I don't think we've deserved to lose four on the bounce and I don't think we deserved to lose on Saturday.

"I thought there was enough team spirit and workrate to get a point at least."
