West Brom make £4m bid for Matt Phillips

West Brom have made their first move in the summer transfer market with a £4m bid for QPR winger Matt Phillips.

The 25-year-old has been a long-term target for head coach Tony Pulis, who hopes to complete the deal some time next week.

Albion had a £7m bid for the Scottish international rejected by QPR last summer, who valued the winger then at £10m, but Phillips has now got just one year left on his contract.

Rangers are trying to offload some of their highest earners as they adjust to life in the Championship and it's believed they will be willing to sell.

Pulis sees Phillips as a younger upgrade for Stephane Sessegnon, who was allowed to leave the club at the end of the season when his £50,000-a-week contract ran out.

Although the Baggies head coach is currently in France as a Euro 2016 pundit for ITV, Albion's new technical director Nick Hammond has been working hard behind the scenes during his first summer at the club.

Phillips scored eight goals and laid on five assists during 44 games in the Championship last season, but Pulis was impressed with the winger's contribution during the season before and has no doubts that he's cut out for the rigours of the Premier League.

It's understood the Baggies boss has acknowledged the fact that his team needs to be more creative in the final third next season after an uninspiring campaign on the pitch.

Albion also released striker Victor Anichebe alongside Sessegnon and Pulis sees getting Phillips as the first step on the road to rebuilding the attacking forces of his team.
