West Brom boss Tony Pulis was pleased with the reception given to Saido Berahino after the striker made his Hawthorns return in the draw with Southampton.

The 22-year-old was welcomed on with a mixture of cheers and boos from the 24,265-strong crowd.

He came on as a 55th minute substitute, in his first appearance after threatening to go on strike after being denied a deadline day move to Tottenham.

But Pulis felt the reaction was largely positive, saying: "I'm pleased he had such a great reception, that's wonderful and it shows the quality and the depth of our supporters to have given him such a reception.

"He's a young boy. He's made mistakes and everybody in this room has made mistakes in their life. What he's got to do is learn by them, move on and make sure he doesn't make them again.

"I just hope and pray he does that, because he is a talent. When we brought him on in the second-half you saw glimpses and bits and pieces of what he can do.

"I was not surprised by the reaction. Not from this crowd. The crowd here have been wonderful, absolutely wonderful."

Albion picked up a first home league point of the season in what was an otherwise drab goalless game.

Southampton's Jay Rodriguez missed the best chance when he headed wide, while Baggies striker Salomon Rondon fired over in the second-half.

The hosts might have had a first half penalty when Matt Targett appeared to foul Callum McManaman, but Pulis felt the Albion winger had dived.

He said: "I've looked at it and I think Callum's feet actually go up from under him and I don't think the player has touched him.

"I'll be having a chat with Callum on Monday. I don't like to see that. The referee and the linesman made a fantastic decision and they deserve a lot of credit for it."

Saints boss Ronald Koeman, somewhat bizzarely, took the opposite view and felt his side got the benefit of the referee's decision.

He said: "I think Matt takes a lot of risk sliding in the box and was lucky the referee didn't whistle for a penalty – he couldn't say anything if did whistle for a penalty.

"I always say to the defenders keep on your feet and don't go down because that gives the referee the opportunity to give a penalty. We were lucky he didn't whistle for the penalty."
