Albion still want a deal to capture star Matt Phillips
Albion will make a fresh attempt to land top target Matt Phillips before the end of the transfer window.
The Baggies remain very interested in the QPR winger despite negotiations with the Loftus Road club hitting the buffers in recent weeks.
And they will attempt to broker a compromise to take the 24-year-old to The Hawthorns after watching him dismantle Wolves on Tuesday.
Joint assistant head coach Mark O'Connor, one of boss Tony Pulis' most trusted lieutenants, was in the stands at Molineux to see Phillips score twice and tee up a goal for Charlie Austin as QPR overturned a 2-0 deficit to beat Kenny Jackett's side 3-2.
Phillips is one of the Baggies' longest-standing transfer targets, but Pulis has so far refused to meet the London club's £10m valuation of the Scotland international, who made his name as a Premier League player with Blackpool.
Pulis believes Rangers have set their asking price too high for Phillips, but Albion officials still believe there is room for negotiation before the window closes on September 1.
The Phillips pursuit is tangled in a web of Albion transfer dealings that centre around Tottenham's pursuit of Saido Berahino.
Spurs are expected to return in the next few days with an improved, second bid for the striker and the outcome of that saga could affect the rest of the club's business.
Tottenham defender Feberico Fazio, who is Pulis's No.1 centre-back target, could still be used as a bargaining chip by Spurs in their battle for Berahino even though the Baggies believed they were close to concluding a deal earlier this week.
They are unlikely to return to QPR with a bid for Charlie Austin, who is valued at around £15m, even if Berahino is sold.
