Neil Lennon this afternoon dramatically quit Celtic after four years in charge – sparking rumours of possible interest in the Albion head coach's job.

The former midfielder released a statement confirming his departure from Parkhead and speculation began immediately about a possible move to England.

Lennon said: "I have parted company with Celtic.

"I can't thank Peter Lawwell (chief executive) and the board enough for their backing and support.

"The club are in a very strong position and I wish the fans and the club all the very best for the future."

Lennon took over at Parkhead from former Albion boss Tony Mowbray following his unhappy spell in charge.

Since 2010 he has led the Hoops to three league titles and two Scottish Cups.

He also previously led Celtic to the Champions League last 16, a victory over Barcelona in November 2012 being his side's most high-profile achievement.

However, he is believed to have been concerned that his present side would be unable to negotiate three rounds of qualifying next season.

Lennon has often expressed his desire to manage in the Premier League and has been linked with the vacancies at Norwich City and Albion, with bookmakers slashing his odds of succeeding Pepe Mel to 8-1.

The former midfielder played for Manchester City, Crewe and Leicester City before joining Celtic in 2000. He returned as first-team coach in 2008 after short spells with Nottingham Forest and Wycombe.
