West Brom midfielder Zoltan Gera poised to receive a rousing send-off against Stoke City
Amid the inevitable bitterness and recriminations of Sunday, a true Hawthorns hero looks set to bring the curtain down on one of the most popular Albion careers of recent times.
Injury might prevent Zoltan Gera getting on the field for the Baggies' season finale against Stoke. But the Hungary international is guaranteed a rousing send-off from a sold-out stadium if, as expected, the game turns out to be the last with Gera on the payroll.
Two spells, a total of seven years, 191 appearances and 29 goals have made the 35-year-old the closest thing the Baggies have to a Premier League legend.
And team-mates past and present agree Gera deserves every accolade that will come his way on Sunday while others at the club inevitably feel the wrath of disgruntled fans.
"First and foremost let's talk about Zoltan as a man," said Darren Moore, who played alongside Gera in his first spell at The Hawthorns. "He is a wonderful guy and a great family man.
"Himself, his wife and his children are really good people and I have had the pleasure of knowing him from his early days in this country.
"He is just a great guy and, if this is to be his last game with the club, he is someone that will always be remembered by the fans as a massively popular and really important player in the club's history.
"He has performed really well for the club and been an integral part of everything they have achieved in the last few years.
"And as a player he has been excellent. He is very clever, very forward-thinking and always capable of a killer pass. In a way, Zoltan has been to Albion what Samir Nasri or David Silva are to Manchester City.
"It is a shame if this is the end of his Albion career but his contribution to the club will never been forgotten.
"If it is his final day then I'm sure he will get a great reception from the fans and he deserves every bit of it."
Sunday certainly looks like the end for Gera at Albion after his much-welcomed return from Fulham in 2011 turned sour due to injuries.
Having electrified The Hawthorns in his first spell between 2004 and 2008, Gera re-signed to link up again with Roy Hodgson, the man who took him to Craven Cottage. But he suffered two cruciate knee ligament injuries in as many seasons and is now fighting a different injury as he bids to make one last appearance in Baggies colours.
It seems unlikely his contract will be renewed when it expires this summer, meaning victory would represent a winning send-off for a hugely popular player.
"It would be nice to send him out on a high," said goalkeeper Ben Foster.
"He signed pretty much the same day I did and I have had the pleasure of not only playing alongside him but also training with him and being in the same environment as him day to day.
"He's a great servant to the club and a great guy and we need to put in a performance now to send him off well."
Injury could also prevent Billy Jones playing in what could also be his final game with the club.
The full-back, who is struggling with a hamstring injury, has yet to agree an extension to his contract, which expires this summer.
