Sunderland 2 West Brom 0 - match report and pictures
[gallery]Abject Albion slumped to a 2-0 defeat on Wearside as Sunderland secured their Premier League survival with first-half goals from Jack Colback and Fabio Borini.
The Baggies failed to fire at all and technically their battle against relegation will go down to the final day of the season, although their superior goal difference means they are effectively safe.
Sunderland threatened first when Borini collected a lay-off in the eighth minute and hit a powerful 20-yard shot that Ben Foster leapt high to touch over his crossbar.
And the hosts went close again moments later when the forced a corner on the left and Seb Larsson's flag-kick flew across the face of goal and was sliced beyond his own far post by Gareth McAuley.
The opening goal arrived in the 13th minute when the home side carved Albion open.
Marcos Alonso beat Steven Reid and crossed for Colback, who got away from Claudio Yacob and stabbed home a close-range shot.
It was 2-0 on 31 minutes as the Albion's defence caved in again.
Yacob gave the ball away, Larsson lifted the ball over the Baggies rearguard and Borini timed his run to perfection before beating Foster with a fine finish.
There was a brief moment of hope for the Baggies before half-time when Saido Berahino had a shot saved by Vito Mannone.
And there were a couple of moments of promised early in the second half.
Half-time substitute Craig Dawson delivered a fine cross that just evaded Victor Anichebe at the far post.
And then Sessesgnon twice went close, first with a long-range drive and then with a dart in from the right and a left-footed effort.
But the hosts regained the upper hand and should have wrapped up the game when Colback crossed from the left to substitute Jozy Altidore, but he fired wide at the far post when he should have scored.
And moments later more good play from Larsson in midfield released Santiago Vergini on the right and he dragged a cross-shot just wide of the far post.
