West Brom eye double swoop as Mel looks to rebuild
Forwards Ruben Castro and Joel Campbell today emerged as potential transfer targets for Pepe Mel as defender Gareth McAuley handed the Albion boss a major fitness boost.
Mel is eyeing up possible recruits for the summer if he is handed the task of managing the Baggies next season – and Castro and Campbell are understood to be on his list.
And the Spaniard is expected to be boosted for Sunday's trip to Arsenal by the return of key defender McAuley following a two-game injury absence.
Mel's own job prospects remains uncertain with the former Real Betis man set to meet chairman Jeremy Peace in the next fortnight to discuss his future.
But he is already eyeing a possible revamp of the Hawthorns squad if he is kept on and Castro and Campbell, who he managed in Seville, are among those he will ask the club to consider.
Castro looks set to leave Betis this summer following their relegation from La Liga and Mel is a long-standing admirer of the 32-year-old, who has netted 70 goals in 132 league appearances for his current club.
Costa Rica international Campbell, who is contracted to Arsenal, spent last season on loan at Betis under Mel as the club qualified for the Europa League.
He played primarily as a winger, scoring twice in 28 appearances, and has spent this season on loan at Olympiakos in Greece.
Albion face a major rebuilding job at the end of the season with three players – Steven Reid, Zoltan Gera and Billy Jones – out of contract and five players reaching the end of season-long loans.
Meanwhile, McAuley is scheduled to resume training later this week and Hawthorns medics are hopefully he will fit to travel to the Emirates Stadium after a calf problem.
The Baggies, who know their Premier League survival could be secured this weekend, are waiting on the fitness of groin injury victim Steven Reid, who is rated as 50-50 for the trip to North London.
Liam Ridgewell (knee) and Zoltan Gera (hamstring) are not expected to make the trip to Arsenal despite making good progress in their recoveries.
Albion believe the duo will be available for Wednesday week's trip to Sunderland.
