Pepe Mel planning revamp at West Brom
Pepe Mel today claimed he is ready to build a new Albion team after leading the Baggies to the brink of Premier League safety.
Mel will meet chairman Jeremy Peace at the end of the season to discuss his own uncertain Hawthorns future – but is already looking ahead to revamping the squad.
Saturday's 1-0 win against West Ham means Albion's top-flight safety could be confirmed at the weekend but a huge summer awaits with a host of players potentially on their way out.
Mel said: "There are a lot of players who are going to be out of contract so it's very much a case of creating a new team.
"The make-up of this team will be very important. That will define the future.
"It's not a case of wanting to change things, it's simply a fact that we need a new team.
"There are lots of players who are out of contract and players who will perhaps not continue so, of course, if I'm involved in West Brom I will need to have an important role in this.
"Right now there are only currently 13 players with a contract in place.
"The choice of the other nine or 10 players – if West Brom go with me – is something I'll have a say in.
"We have a meeting in the week that the season ends and it's then that we'll talk.
"We need to sit down, the chairman and myself, and we need to look at what he wants for the future."
Steven Reid, Zoltan Gera and Billy Jones are all out of contract this summer with Jones holding talks over a new deal.
The contracts of Chris Brunt, Graham Dorrans and Liam Ridgewell are also up, but the club have one-year options on the trio.
Goran Popov, Scott Sinclair, Morgan Amalfitano, Thievy Bifouma and Matej Vydra will reach the end of their loans in the close season.
Mel picked up his first home win as boss on Saturday and hailed his team's displays in April.
"During the month we've got a lot of points I think the team is continually looking more similar to what we work on during the week," he said.
"But we've still got three games to go and we need to finish as high as possible."
