Preview: West Brom's Gareth McAuley hoping for repeat Liverpool win
When Albion last went to Anfield, Gareth McAuley enjoyed one of the most special moments of his career.
But the Baggies defender insists history will count for nothing when Steve Clarke's men return to Liverpool tomorrow looking to prolong their winning run against the Reds.
McAuley's headed goal in February set Albion on course for a 2-0 win – their second successive victory at Liverpool's famous home – and gave Clarke a winning return to the club who had shown him the door seven months earlier. It completed a memorable Premier League double over the Reds and followed previous boss Roy Hodgson's winning return to Anfield in the previous campaign.
But McAuley is expecting an even tougher test tomorrow against a Liverpool side riding high in the early-season Premier League table.
"Last season was a special moment," said McAuley. "It was a game we needed a win. We had to dig deep and we were playing on the counter attack. We soaked up a lot.
"To score a goal there was nice.
"It was my wee fella Bobby's third birthday as well. It was a nice moment for me and my family but even better for the club and the fans.
"Three wins in a row is a great achievement but it's all history now.
"We need to go there and do it all again. They're flying this season and playing some good football so it's going to be a massive test for us.
"They're in their second year with Brendan Rodgers and they've now got a style and a flow about them.
"But we're gaining confidence ourselves and we're beginning to bed players in. We're getting some momentum and hopefully we can go there and cause an upset."
Albion head for Anfield just four weeks after claiming an historic victory at another of English football's most daunting arenas, Old Trafford.
They have also won at Arsenal in recent seasons and McAuley insists the Baggies are no longer fazed by running out on the Premier League's biggest stages.
"If you do that you're playing the occasion rather than the game," said the Northern Ireland international.
"The lads have gained a lot of Premier League experience over the years and they know how to handle themselves at these places.
"You know you're going to get a very tough game. You know you're going to be under pressure but it's about being calm in those situations.
"You need to know and believe that you're going to get a chance to score. When that comes you have to take it because you're not going to get too many opportunities."
Tomorrow will bring McAuley and centre-back partner Jonas Olsson face to face with the top flight's most in-form strike duo with Daniel Sturridge reunited with Luis Suarez following the Uruguay international's lengthy for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic last season.
And, having coped well with each of the duo individually in recent encounters, McAuley believes the partnership could be a different proposition.
"They're very clever players," said McAuley. "They link well and one of them can go long while the other comes short.
"They have good movement and it's going to be up to us to make clever decisions in the game.
"We'll have to be on top of our game if we're going to stop them.
"Suarez's a quality player, world class. We know from playing against him what he can do. He's direct and he's quite lucky as well.
"He seems to get all the little ricochets and bounces going his way."
