Nicklas Bendtner and Pablo Piatti new West Brom targets
West Brom were today gearing up for a frantic transfer countdown after goalkeeper Ben Foster handed them another potential headache. Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner and Valencia winger Pablo Piatti were the latest names added to the list of possible targets.
But with just seven days remaining in the transfer window, the Baggies' priorities could hinge on the results of scans on Foster's worrying ankle injury and Nicolas Anelka's decision on his Hawthorns future.
Foster limped out of Saturday's goalless draw with Everton and left Goodison Park on crutches and with an orthopaedic boot protecting his foot and ankle.
Albion have their fingers crossed for good news but head coach Steve Clarke admitted the injury, which was suffered as Foster walked around his penalty area, was a worry.
Clarke was also awaiting word from Anelka today on his potential retirement.
Fans reported seeing the France international at a Birmingham gym yesterday with Baggies midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu, raising hopes that he could return.
Anelka's decision could determine whether Albion target a striker in the next seven days, with reports from London claiming the Baggies and Crystal Palace have enquired about out-of-favour Gunners striker Bendtner.
The Denmark international has endured difficult loan spells at Sunderland and Juventus in the last two seasons and is surplus to requirements at Arsenal, who are believed to value him at around £2m.
Meanwhile, Piatti's agent has told the Spanish media that the Baggies are among several Premier League clubs to register an interest in the diminutive Argentina international wideman, who could be available on loan.
Valencia had agreed a deal to sell the 5ft 4in 24-year-old to Rennes but he has turned down the move to France.
Piatti wanted to remain in Spain but has been unable to find a club willing to pay his £20,000-per-week wages.
